Few people garden without wearing gardening gloves to protect their hands. So why is it that so many people garden without wearing gardening sleeves to protect their arms? One good reason to wear gardening sleeves is the word Cutaneous. It may sound a lot like the word cute, but Cutaneous Toxicity is not cute.
Cutaneous Toxicity is a process in which chemicals such as pesticides can be absorbed by through the skin into the blood causing toxic effects. Skin irritation and skin rashes produced by irritating chemical substances are one noticeable type toxicity. Death is another. Though rare, if enough pesticide is absorbed through the skin, it can happen.
For gardeners, there are three simple rules for avoiding Cutaneous Toxicity.
Recognize that pesticides, fungicides, and a lot of the chemicals you use in your gardening activities are poisons. They are designed to kill pests, but can also cause health effects in people. Read the labels of all of chemicals and sprays that you work with.
Poisons can enter your body through inhalation, ingestion, and contact with your skin. You don’t have to spill a pesticide on an open wound to become poisoned. Simply having an open poison too close to your face can result in its inhalation.
When working with pesticides, sprays, and chemicals, before you start your work, cover up. During the mixing of the pesticide, the loading of it into your dispenser, and then the applying it to your flowers, bushes, or trees as well as the clean up afterwards, you are likely to come in contact with the product. If the wind is blowing while you are spraying, it is hard to not get some of the pesticide on you. So cover up. Depending on the toxicity of the product, you should cover your arms with garden sleeves and even your nose and mouth with a breathing mask and your eyes with safety glasses.
So get in the habit of using arm sleeves for gardening. Avoiding Cutaneous Toxicity is just one of the many benefits they will offer you.
